Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Drove through the OK panhandle, saw the Milky Way, hiked up Capulin, played frisbee golf on top of Angelfire, rafted the Rio Grande (saw a bobcat), hiked to Williams Lake (brother & two of his kids went up Wheeler Peak), son did some downhill MTB with his cousins, saw a church built in the 1700s and walked a bridge over a very deep gorge.

Northern New Mexico is beautiful.

Shhhhhh.  We have enough Denverites messing it up...  last thing we need is the Angelenos coming over!

Clear water and mountains gets me every time . I have seen (not just traveled through) 26 US Sates but mostly up and down the coasts and the “hip” cities in the middle. Also any sates I saw from my late teens to late 20s are probably worth a re-do. All of those trips were parties with different scenery.

Austin is a perfect example. I never shut up about how great Austin is, but the fact of the matter is that I was there once for Formula 1 in 2013. I got blackout drunk with my best friend, ate tacos, went to a concert, and did the entire F1 weekend. Amazing trip and I did see a lot of the city but its because we had to walk 6 shitfaced miles home.

Haha! You definitely should go back to Austin and take in some of the natural areas around and outside of the city.

We took a two week, 5000+ mile western road trip a couple years ago that was one of the best of my life.

All of the trip’s since we began to plan for our child have been far more enriching, haha. Now that she’s here and getting to the age where shes really able to start doing stuff each one is more memorable. My wife has been wanting a camper FOREVER and were going to make that happen as the driveway expands.

Nice! I really want to do more camping with our kids.

I was so proud of my little guy this trip (he’s 7). He was fearless on the chairlift going up the mountain, was a trooper on our 4 mile hike with 1000' of climb (he did complain some, of course), and got in and floated alongside our raft even though the water was pretty frigid.

I did a 1000 mile trip with 4 miles of interstate a few years ago. Definitely the way to travel.

Wish I had the time and the back and the transmission to do it again.

What a legendary trip. Who needs highways anyhow?

Hope you get to do it again someday soon (maybe in a cush rental?).

Amen, brother.

Was really struck by the vastness of it all in certain areas. Two-lane road, visibility for miles and miles, and not another car to be seen for minutes upon minutes.

I wrote about that once. I suppose a rental Wrangler would be ok but $$$$$.

Lovely!

Dang I gotta actually get out and see some of this great country of ours. I WAS supposed to do exactly that but a pesky little virus ruined plans beyond repair.

Sorry to hear it. We were supposed to have a big family reunion at a ranch outside of Zion, but it was cancelled, so we did this instead.

I’d encourage you to get out, and soon (assuming you’re not on complete lockdown) . It can be done safely; you just have to be smart about it.

I live in Georgia so I just have to be careful around the people who don’t care about anyone’s safety at all. Mask wearing is not widespread but I’m more concerned about people who don’t even attempt to social distance.

Even if I have to go alone, I’m going to have to find a fun place to go for fear of losing my sanity. I could hike in the national park too.

I have a trip to the Lane Motor Museum planned for two weeks so there’s that to look forward to. Nothing like the scope of the Grand Canyon trip that got cancelled.

I need to do some maintenance on the Cruze so at least that's some variety. Glad you could get out and about and have some fun though. Post more pics soon.

Yeah, I completely understand.

Seriously, this trip was fantastic for our physical & mental health. Get it on the calendar today!

Hope to make it to the Lane someday - I’m sure you’ll make it to the Grand Canyon eventually, but that sucks it had to be called off.

Thanks - I’ll try to. I’m thankful for the other Oppos whose posts inspire me to get out, explore, and be more active .

I get it, but just as your beloved Jeep takes you places you couldn’t go in other cars, don’t let it be the reason you don’t take trips you’d otherwise like to take. A Forte will get you to 95 % of trailheads in the US. =)

If it weren’t for Oppo I’d have gone insane months ago. Travel escapades have been relaxing to read and get me thinking about the future at least. It is a good way to get inspired.

I’ve actually (straight face is hard because it is so unbelievable) never been west of about the Florida Panhandle. I’m ready for a change of scenery. Any scenery at all.

Summer classes have made open days harder than I expected. Especially with my current inability to concentrate. I'll be seeing some people for the 4th (no big party this year) at least so that will be fun.

Yeah, but I also enjoy the convertible aspect of it. It’s hard being so demanding.

It is a fantastic respite from the “normal world”.

Dude... you’ll love the West. Definitely harder to access without a plane taking you most of the way. Regardless, there are beautiful places to explore all across our county, many right in our metaphorical backyards . You just have to seek them out, carve out the time, and make it happen.

I could see how classes could get in the way - hope you have a great 4th!

Thank you! I have some time between Fall classes starting so maybe I’ll try to organize a few nights away with the boys. Sadly that’s like 4 weeks away.

Of course I am quite fortunate to have a (small) National Battlefield Park almost in my backyard.

Take care and have a great 4th!
